It dawned on me today that two years ago this week, I joined Facebook. I’ve spent a lot of time on the social networking site in the two years and have reconnected with people from my past, and even made some new friends. One of the most recent trends I’ve noticed on Facebook is a note going around called “25 Random Things About Me.” What the note usually contains is pretty self-explanatory, 25 random things about that person, who then tags other people and tries to get them to come up with their own list. I have not received such notes from anyone, but will go ahead and share my 25 random things in this post. The best part is, I won’t need to burden others by passing this along to them. Here goes:
1. I am proud to call Cedar Rapids my hometown. You don’t live anywhere 20 years and decide you don’t like it there. I missed this place terribly when I spent two years in Sioux City and was thrilled when I had the chance to come home.
2. I like to chew Orbit gum. My favorite flavor is bubble gum, although right now I am going through a box of wintermint.
3. I remember when MTV played nothing but music videos like this one from Stevie Nicks!
I also remember when they had Martha Quinn as a VJ. As much as I enjoy watching videos from the ’80s on VH1 Classic from time to time, it’s just not the same as the original Music Television.
4. I have only been out of the United States twice. Once was to Vancouver for Expo 86. The second time was this past fall, when I helped my brother settle into the United Kingdom, where he student taught.
5. I was an Iowa All-Stater in 1998, both in speech for radio news and vocal music. I don’t publicly sing anymore, not even for Karaoke, so please don’t ask me to.
6. I went to Xavier High School here in Cedar Rapids. My brother went to Jefferson.
7. I am Catholic and don’t even remember when my last confession was.
8. I worked as a restaurant supervisor at The Eastern Iowa Airport for six years before I left to go into my chosen career. I still attended school during this time.
9. I have been to six NFL games (all Kansas City Chiefs), 10 Major League Baseball games, and even one WNBA game.
10. I lost my Motorola cell phone in the Target Center in Minneapolis at that WNBA game. I got a replacement. Three months later, I switched to the iPhone because I wouldn’t be able to use my Motorola while I was in the UK.
11. I had a class at Iowa with Cleveland Browns offensive lineman Eric Steinbach. One time, we had to attend this lecture. He comes and sits right in front of me. This guy is massive. He then turns around and asks me if he’s in my way. I say I’m fine. He ends up moving anyway. Wasn’t that nice of him?
12. The other day, I was walking on Fifth Street SE crossing Third Avenue, where The Gazette is, and I had the walk light. Cars turning on to Third apparently could not wait for me to cross the street, and one nearly ran into me. Don’t believe me? Ask Diana Nollen, our arts and entertainment editor. She saw the whole thing.
13. I watch “Spongebob Squarepants” every now and then and know all the words to the theme song.
14. I like taking public transit when I am in a big city. I’ve ridden the subway in Chicago, Washington, St. Louis, San Francisco, Minneapolis and London.
15. I was at a family reunion in Orange County, Calif., in 1999 when I twisted my ankle playing touch football. The next day, I went around Disneyland in a wheelchair. Because of this, I didn’t have to wait long to go on the rides.
16. I am a sensitive person and a perfectionist. I have the tendency to overreact to things.
17. I was a member of National Honor Society in high school.
18. When I get into work at 9 a.m., I open a can of diet soda and drink it. I’ve been told countless times by people I shouldn’t drink that stuff. Eventually, I will wish I listened.
19. Some people think I’d make a good father. The only problem I’d have with children is when they throw up everywhere except in the toilet. I don’t know that I would take that very well.
20. I am a hypochondriac.
21. I have downloaded 280 songs onto my iPhone.
22. I enjoy working for The Gazette and hope I can continue to do so for a while.
23. I got my haircut today.
24. I don’t like ruffling other people’s feathers. It just happens sometimes.
25. I am never doing one of these again. It takes too long.
